I think we can all agree that a lot has changed in the last year or so. My goal is to foster the love of reading while also giving students a safe and comfortable environment. Headphones are used daily so students can review video lessons, listen to music or audiobooks, explore virtual resources, and more. I try to foster social-emotional maturity through mindfulness. Access to fidget toys has made a world of difference in my classroom. From ACT prep to in-class assessments, students have found these to be particularly helpful in relieving anxiety and maintaining focus. Books written in a variety of formats from graphic novels to poetry are lacking in my classroom and students have expressed so much interest in these texts. Given the variety in backgrounds of my students, I also seek to stock my shelves with stories from different perspectives so that my students can hopefully find themselves in these books.
