Young children more readily apply what they’ve learned from stories that are realistic; and studies show that children's books with people have a greater moral impact on children than stories with animals and inanimate objects. Our classroom wants books that are both windows and mirrors for our students: books that reflect who they are, books that show who they can become, and books about how others walk through the world. My school is in a high needs district, with 100% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Over 60% of the children in my school speak more than one language and are learning English. Our students love to listen to read aloud stories, and they love to turn and talk to one another about the characters and big ideas in high quality texts. I want to bring books to our students that provide lots of opportunities for them to learn about diversity and inclusion.
