"I don't know why I said reading was boring," a student said. "That was fun. Can we do it again?" This was said after a read aloud of one of Mr. Wolf's graphic novels, which showed me the importance of finding texts that are relevant to students' interests and needs. These graphic novels have many themes that school children can relate to, thus helping them stay interested and engaged in reading. Another bonus is that characters in the stories are diverse, giving representation to identities that might not fit the dominant culture. Finally, the graphic novel format is a good medium for small groups to take turns reading aloud dialogue and narration to practice fluency and expression. Some students enjoy reading more because of the performative and social aspect of this activity.
