If you want to see some real magic in the classroom, watch what happens when students can get their hands involved in the lessons. Being able to hold, see, and manipulate physical models of abstract math concepts truly helps the students understand what they are learning. Fractions, finances, decimals, multiplication, and division are big topics in 4th grade math. These are all real life math topics. We really want our students to fully understand how to tell time, how to count money, how to multiply and divide, and how to compare fractions, because this is the math we use as adults everyday. Students love to explore these topics with blocks and puzzles and games. They will use these manipulatives in lessons, and in independent practice times. When they are engaged in learning, and having fun, that's when the magic happens.
