Picture books are a great source of background knowledge for things in the world that are not in a child's backyard. They have illustrations that add to the tone, mood & imagery of the story. The story is in the pictures. Picture books can aid in helping students begin to learn that reading is fun, and that is the perfect way to build better readers. Picture books are the fastest delivery system of words, Period. The more we pour words, sounds, syllables into their brains, the more they will use (when they speak and write) and understand (when they listen and read) the words we have poured into them. They have approximately 500 words therefore authors choose high utility vocabulary words to say more with less. Picture books like folktales and fairytales offer diverse cultural narratives and beliefs that differ from our own, that captivates students' attention and increase engagement and curiosity. These picture books will also act as mentor texts to help my students learn the reading and writing skills they should learn in 5th grade.
