The best way to develop a love for reading is by finding a high interest novel to capture the students' interest. I believe I have found a novel that will not only spark student interest, but also introduce them to an established author who has thirty-five novels they could read for the future. The Crossover is a novel about two teenage boys and their coming of age angst, told in a mix of free verse and hip hop poetry. Many students are intimidated by poetry, they think it is either too juvenile or too difficult. Kawame Alexander introduces students to a powerful style of poetry which delivers a compelling story. My hope is that students will be inspired to read another one of Mr. Alexander's novels for their independent reading selection.
