Students will be studying these graphic novels through book clubs. Using literacy strategies and collaborative learning, striving readers will be able to study novels that are often challenging and intimidating to them in ELA courses. My Language Arts course is only for striving readers (Tier 3 and some ELLs) and graphic novels will make the story accessible to all of my students. Students may have my Language Arts course all 4 years, as many receive Special Education services or are English Language Learners and need time to develop their literacy skills. This means that they can select a different graphic novel over the years, giving them ample opportunity to read great stories. These graphical novels will provide an alternative format of reading and complement the shorter fictional and informational text that we read as well as modern novels from diverse authors.
