A refrigerator and stove are two very important items for the learning environment in a Functional Living Skills classroom. My students are expected to learn skills that they can use both at home and in the community as they get older. They will learn how to properly operate a stove in order to ensure they don't harm themselves while cooking. They will also learn about food safety including the heating and cooling of foods to their correct temperatures. My students will regular check the temperature of the refrigerator to make sure it is within the safe limits. The other items that I am requesting, along with the stove and refrigerator, will be used as a hands on service project. The goal is for my students to learn culinary skills, and then show what they've learned to staff and the community in our building. My students will create a weekly menu and order form for our school community to use. They will prepare coffee and tea using the coffee makers and water kettle, and deliver items using the service cart at the end of each week. They will also learn how to bake various items from scratch and deliver those items as well. My students and I are very excited to get started on this service learning project! There is so much to learn and the best learning experiences for them are those that are hands on.
