My classroom is a studio arts classroom. Students in my courses come to me with a diverse range of talents and abilities, as well as a range of motivations for taking one of my classes. Oak Grove is an urban title one high school, so many of my students receive free/reduced lunches. The students at OGHS are incredibly diverse, with more than 32 languages spoken on campus. It is a fabulous place to work as the students teach me as much, if not more, than I teach them. While the population I work with is not without its challenges, the rewards far outweigh any difficulties I face. Students in my classes learn traditional studio art processes and media as well as folk art techniques and art history. In addition to the art-making that happens in my classroom, students learn to be the best versions of themselves and form lasting bonds with classmates through the structure I employ.
