Delivering classroom guidance lessons is a part of my job, in addition to small group and individual counseling. Over the last couple of years, I have deeply considered the potential dangers of ‘whitewashing’ an SEL curriculum; one that just focuses on getting along and respecting everyone without any consideration for the larger socio-political context. By expanding my counseling library and using only texts with diverse characters, families, languages, and backgrounds, I hope to uncover new personal pathways for supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of our historically under-served students.
