Throughout my fifteen years of teaching, I have consistently observed that students learn better when they have strong social emotional health. There have always been struggles and experiences that weigh down our students' minds but they've been greatly exacerbated by the current pandemic. I often hear people comment that kids are resilient, but that doesn't mean they don't need support.
Social emotional well-being has an incredible impact on a classroom - for both the teacher and students. My district began implementing a mindfulness program a few years ago and I've seen great improvements in overall behavior and mood in my classroom, but I still want to do more to support our needs. My students are all military kids and face the challenge of frequent moves and parent(s) being deployed. I would love to be better equipped to support these children through routine practices in our classroom that will improve their overall wellness.
I also want to help support my fellow teachers throughout our district. Teaching involves frequent curriculum and policy changes, which also requires an incredible amount of time and energy. These things are necessary, but they can put a great deal of stress on teachers, and that stress can sneak into the overall classroom environment. Teachers tend to be incredible givers and often put the needs of their students (and their own families) before their own. .
I want to participate in Breathe for Change's 200-hour Digital Wellness, SEL, and Yoga Teacher Training for Educators and Community Leaders. In this training, I will become a certified yoga instructor and qualified to lead wellness classes for my students and school community. This training will allow me to improve the social emotional well-being of myself, my colleagues, and countless students!
