MHS students score lower in reading and writing than students at many North Texas schools, partly because it is difficult for teachers from all over the country to find readings that engage our students, especially as we push forward trying to meet the demands of standardized testing by raising STAAR scores post-COVID. We can and need to foster a culture of reading and learning from the written word at MacArthur. There is no better way to do this than to embrace the excitement of the brand-new newspaper staff by providing them with the tools to publish a student-led and student-designed newspaper that gives students reading material they can really relate to.
