We're a small school with a limited budget, and our acting department is brand new. The only acting books we have come from my own personal collection. Diane Timmerman's Spare Scenes gives budding actors dozens of ways to present a scene, allowing each student pair to work on the same scene while creating a different effect. The scenes are written with limited punctuation and provide no backstory, set, or stage directions, permitting students to workshop their characters and their character motivations. This gives each acting pair ample opportunity to develop a solid storyline while simultaneously introducing them to the craft of playwriting.
