What song speaks the most to you? In the ukulele unit, students will be able to connect to their favorite songs and learn new ones through melody and chord playing. By playing ukuleles, students will receive a visual and auditory introduction to music theory: they will be able to see half-step intervals in each fret and count larger intervals; practice reading, writing, and playing rhythms they have been learning by strumming single strings and simple chords; and learn about the notes that make up major and minor chords. As students play and learn altogether, they will discover their strengths as musicians and as leaders in the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to work individually, in pairs, and in small groups and learn with the peers of similar or different skill levels (opportunities for peer feedback) or similar musical tastes.
