Play requires planning, higher-level thinking, cognitive skills, math skills, and language skills. Most educators and leaders are focused on the students in 1st grade and up and closing the gaps in their learning caused during the 2020-21 school year. We must not forget that our youngest learners also suffered missed opportunities and potential learning loss. Due to mask mandates and distancing guidelines, our PK children were not fully immersed in authentic opportunities in building oral language through play. I would like to provide my kindergarten children with a few items to engage in dramatic play. These items will help to get us started. My vision is to have a dramatic play center for the children to visit and the center "theme" would change monthly. This would incorporate the use of new vocabulary. I brainstormed a few examples: a home center, restaurant, veterinary clinic, post office, bank, flower shop, grocery store, etc. I am very excited, but I need some materials to get started.
