In the book A Long Walk to Water, students are introduced to Salva and Nya. Salva is a boy when they first meet him and has been forced to walk out of his village because of war in his country of Sudan. A parallel story is of Nya who is dealing with the scarcity of water in her village also in Sudan. The book brings the political and environmental situation in Sudan to life for my students. It is truly an exciting story with twist and turns and ups and downs that keep my students wanting more each day that we read it. The end of Salva's and Nya's stories come to a exciting conclusion that always brings an audible reaction from my students. I know they will love this book, and I would like each of them to have a copy of their own so that they can write in the margins and fold the page of their favorite part just like we adults do when we own and read our favorite book.
