I teach Spanish to high schoolers in grades 9–12. My students come from a mix of Latinx and Black communities here in Rochester—a city rich in culture but marked by deep poverty. Many of my students face daily challenges like food insecurity, limited access to basic school supplies, and chronic attendance issues, but what amazes me most is how they still show up. They show up tired but smiling. They carry the weight of things kids their age shouldn’t have to but still manage to laugh, joke, and say things like: Miss, you got snacks? Miss, you know I love you. Miss, you’re mean nice... if that makes sense. Some call me "mom" or "ma" because my classroom is more than a class it’s a safe space, a reset, a second home. These students are resilient, brilliant, and proud. They are not defined by their circumstances they are defined by their heart.
