In order to promote print awareness among my students who are emerging readers, it is important for them to have physical, hard copies of the books that are part of our shared reading curriculum. Presently, these books are only available electronically for projection on a SmartBoard. With hard copies in front of them, my students will be more engaged and more likely to enjoy reading. They will be better able to learn book basics including how to take care of books, how books are organized and how meaning can be derived not only from print but also from pictures and graphics. Development of foundational reading skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension essential in first grade will be greatly facilitated.
