My students are an amazing group of learners who bring so much personality, joy, and determination into our classroom each day. I teach a self-contained CBI classroom with many high-need students who have significant communication, academic, sensory, and functional needs. Several of my students have communication challenges, including students who are nonverbal or have limited verbal communication. Because every student communicates and learns differently, our classroom is built around meeting each child where they are. We use visuals, hands-on activities, repetition, modeling, and different forms of communication to help every student participate and have a voice in their learning. What I love most about my students is that every accomplishment is worth celebrating. Communicating a need, recognizing a letter, completing a task, making a choice, or participating independently can represent tremendous growth. My students work hard for those victories, and I get the privilege of watching their confidence and independence grow along the way. My students may need additional support to access learning, but they are curious, capable, and deserving of the same opportunities to learn, communicate, and succeed as every other child.
