Having a variety of hands on tools that incorporate the senses makes learning not only more meaningful and engaging but also fun! So many children are struggling with reading and writing but when classroom instruction is direct, explicit and systematic and done using multiple senses, learning is achieved much easier. The sand will be used so the children can practice an auditory drill where the students hear me say a sound, which they will then repeat the sound as the write the correct grapheme (letter or letters) that correlate with that sound. Not only is the auditory and visual component being used but also tactile. The students will also get to feel their fingers gliding over the glitter paper for an added tactile experience. The Sounding Out Sight Words book will teach phonics rules to the most commonly used words in the English Language. To help further assist in learning, the "sewing mats" will provide another tactile experience for the students as they write words using a red crayon on paper which is placed over the mat to create a bumpy feel. Words that are "sight words" are known as red words. The students will again being using their auditory, visual and sense of touch to make learning more concrete. Lastly the fidget toy will assist the students in tapping or rather "popping" out each sound they hear in a word. The students will then see how many sounds are used in the word and then write the correct letters down that correspond with those sounds. The items for this project will engage my students so learning is achieved.
