Small group time is essential in a first grade classroom. This gives me the opportunity to work with a small group of students while the rest of the class is working independently or with an instructional assistant. A listening center would allow a small group of students to learn independently during center time. The benefits of listening centers are: *Models fluent reading. *Helps students decode unfamiliar words. *Teaches critical listening skills. *Introduces new vocabulary. *Provides a read-aloud model. *Introduces new genres that students might not otherwise consider. *Introduces students to books above their reading level.
