Last school year we had to learn how to socially distance 3-5 year olds. One of the classroom activities that suffered because of that was holding hands to make a circle. One rainy afternoon in May, when I tried have 16 students finally, feeling safer about touching and everyone having accepted playing while wearing a mask, hold hands to make a circle so we could play parachute, and... they couldn't. They didn't know how to hold the shape of a circle as a class because we weren't able to gather on the carpet and touch each other kindly as we usually do in PreK. It was heartbreaking. And one of the tiny things that seems so simple, and generalizes to other social skills. Additionally, 25+% of my 40 kids are identified as having a Developmental Delay, which makes visible cues even more valuable. As this new school year begins, and our cities COVID numbers are slowly starting to rise, I have decided we must have a carpet space this year! But, my current carpet has old sticky duct tape on it, and is not helpful for circle time. It's a big carpet, because we need a lot of space.
