Currently, the curriculum taught in my school is limited in scope and diversity of authors. With the flexibility I have been given in my reading class, I want to fill in some of those gaps with engaging and important texts. With the help of my librarian friend and after reviewing each text I have made the following selections. I believe these texts will provide unique learning opportunities for every student and allow students to reflect on their own identity and experience. 6th Grade will be reading “New Kid,” an acclaimed graphic novel by Jerry Craft that follows a 12-year-old boy making the transition to a new school. 7th Grade will be reading “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You” originally written by Ibram X. Kendi and adapted for younger audiences by DC Native, Jason Reynolds. 8th Grade will be reading “Long Way Down,” an award winning text by Jason Reynolds that follows a young man grappling with the effects of gun violence.
