The novels I chose for my project, Amal Unbound and They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid's Poems, will be used to add more culturally diverse texts into the 7th grade English curriculum. The two texts offer glimpses into new places, times, and cultures, and feature young female and male protagonists, respectively, that all students can identify with. It's especially crucial that my rural readers have opportunity to learn about experiences and history outside of their own lives. In addition to the cultural perspectives offered by these novels, they are written in prose and poetry, allowing students to appreciate the rich and diverse applications of language in the process of connecting to two young characters, who despite their differences, are in many ways, much like themselves.
