Play-based learning is the optimal way for children to learn, and having an environment that supports and engages this learning is key. Materials that are standards based yet hands on fosters a deep love of exploration and creativity. Materials such as a marble run and a roller coaster creation kit help students learn about physics through trial and error. Students can experience science in a hands on way that creates stronger brain connections that through more traditional learning methods. Students will be able to choose an area of the classroom that suits their interests, giving them a passion for inquiry. The dress up materials will be available in the dramatic play area. This area is utilized by students to act out and process real life scenarios. Pretend play is especially important for children that have experienced trauma or difficulties in life because it allows them a space to safely process their feelings and experiences with the aid of their peers and a safe adult to provide solutions and context. The puppets and reading books are to be utilized in the reading corner. Retelling stories is an important kindergarten skill that includes memory, listening comprehension and sequencing. The Pigeon books are engaging stories with simple language that help struggling and new readers gain confidence as they read stories of their favorite character. Play-based learning is the key to a successful start in a student's educational career, and having adequate materials to engage a wide range of interests and developmental domains is imperative to this success.
