For the past two years, we have worked on our Project Based Learning (PBL) project entitled, Wear, Oh Wear, Has Our Outdoor Stage Gone? It is led by our driving question: How can we re-design our school's outdoor stage to withstand weathering and erosion? This integrates the Grade 4 NGSS study of Earth and Space Science, namely: 4-ESS1-1 and 4-ESS2-1. Requested engineering investigation sets and materials such as the Super Geotextile, the Silt Sock, chicken wire, river rocks, soil, and modeling clay are crucial realia and kinesthetic tools that will especially help our developing language learners access the Ideate Stage in our Design Thinking process for our PBL and NGSS-integrated project. These invaluable materials and art supplies will also be sent home so students can work through the Rapid Prototyping Stage, testing out their solutions in order to find failure points, and using their complex thinking to make the necessary changes against the design rubric. The 21st Century 4C's (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) are the cornerstones of our PBL and NGSS-integrated Design Thinking project. We have had civil engineers from GeoLabs, Inc. and the US Army Corps of Engineers come into our classes to share their engineering and construction background knowledge and criteria to help our students through the Ideate Stage and to give feedback on their design prototypes.
