The desire to be accepted and feel safe are natural for humans to want. Creating a welcoming and comfortable learning environment is essential to the growth of students. Supporting their social and emotional needs, especially coming back to school during this pandemic is important. It is important to talk about race and different abilities and what makes every student special as a classroom community and these materials will help us do that. These materials will be used in-person, but will also help if students are learning from home. Books can be read aloud and shared and art materials can be distributed for at home use. This project aims to build an anti-racist and anti-bias classroom 'ohana that encourages students to not only accept themselves, but accept and support each other. The books will enrich our classroom library with characters that look like my students, promoting belonging and student-led discussions. The art materials will allow my students to create diversity projects, such as mixing paint colors to understand why we all have various skin tones, as well as allow them to express their ideas and curiosities through other projects.
