Research has repeatedly shown a correlation between the amount of time spent reading, and overall reading achievement, including vocabulary and fluency. According to Stephen Krashen, children who participate in Sustained Silent Reading programs (SSR), outperform those who devote similar amounts of time to traditional language arts instruction in a variety of measures of literacy development. Sustained Silent Reading is a time during which a class reads quietly at their own pace. Students are allowed to choose their own reading materials and read independently. For the past three years, I have studied SSR and have implemented a reading program in my classroom. Although I have some materials, I would like to have a more diverse library with a wider range of proficiency levels. Having different complexity levels of reading materials allows students to feel successful and advance at their own pace. Regarding diversity, my goal is to create a library where students can see themselves in the books, books with characters where different identities are represented in the storyline such as ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion, ability, etc. After more than a year teaching in a COVID long distance setting, I am looking forward to working with students in my classroom again. I want to implement a system where students can check out books and take the books home to read even more. We need multiple copies of different books, from easy to read graphic novels to more diverse, culture rich Spanish chapter novels. I want to fill my classroom with engaging materials that will catch the interest of every single one of my students. My goal is to help each student to find their “home run” book to awaken their love of literacy. Help me guide them through the path towards biliteracy. Thank you!
