All of our students need proper and safe access to drinking water each day. They especially need the ability to drink water throughout the day here at our middle school located in Honolulu, Hawaii where temperatures average 85 degrees year round. Providing access to drinking water allows students to remain healthy and hydrated, improves cognitive function, and substitutes for sweetened beverages.
I have requested insulated stainless steel water bottles because they will provide a safe way for all students to have access to drinking water throughout the school day. Because of the pandemic, students are no longer allowed to drink water from our school fountains. Students, therefore, can only drink water during school if they are able to bring a water bottle to school. However, the majority of my students live below the poverty level and water bottles are a luxury that most cannot afford.
It is extremely difficult to tell a thirsty student that they are not allowed to drink water since they do not own a water bottle. These water bottles will be a true blessing to all students and a safe way to provide them with drinking water throughout the school year.
