Each year, the 3rd graders at our school learn about how changes in plant habitats affect how they grow. We also ask students to think about how we can use limited resources sustainably. In this hydroponics project, students combine a variety of skills to first, observe salad being grown in a class hydroponics system. Each 3rd grade class will have their own system to observe themselves. Students will then create their own hydroponics system using a 2 Liter bottle, the growing materials, self watering wick, and nutrients. Our students will be asked to monitor their systems at home. We will discuss how plants can grow and survive without any soil and what that means for our future. Students will get hands on experience observing, creating, and monitoring their own hydroponics system to explore changes in plant habitats and sustainability. I know my students will be engaged in this project! In the past, the 3rd graders did a garden project to explore plant habitats. This project will allow for more discussion of sustainability and how this hands on learning experience can lead to positive changes in our future!
