These materials will be used to bring living Japanese traditions and cultural practices into the classroom as one of my core focuses this year. Last year, the students in Japanese class faced difficulty in finding relevance in Japanese culture to their own due to the virtual classroom setting. This year, the opportunity to do tangible activities will be an educational experience, as well as address the needs of the students’ Social-Emotional development. The difference these supplies will make is the same as comparing a Disneyland commercial to physically going there and experiencing rides, shows, and food first-hand. The yarn will be used in the making of Kumihimo, the art of braiding cords, to give students the opportunity to perpetuate tradition and gain cultural experience. Throughout the making of the braided cords, students will be able to share their own experiences and express themselves socially. In a similar way, the chiyogami, origami, and kirigami supplies will allow for the discovery and practice of other cultural experiences. Each experience will stack upon the other to allow the students to gain a sense of what culture is and why it is so significant in not only Japan, but our local community in Hawaii as well. I want to allow the students to learn and make lasting memories that will mean something to them down the road. I can only hope that through the opportunity to experience Japanese culture in the class, students will reflect upon their own cultural identity and find significance in who they are, what they practice, and why it matters. The significance of these materials is that it will give students the ability to physically experience cultural practices and contrast from all of the limitations students faced last year during the pandemic.
