After a full year of online learning and additional hardships brought on by the pandemic, many students have fallen behind in math. We need to show our students how exciting math can be and why a course like geometry is essential to understanding life at-large, not just a graduation requirement. The book "Shape" by Jordan Ellenberg will help my students understand how geometry plays an essential role in our everyday lives. The New York Times described the book as "“Unreasonably entertaining....reveals how geometric thinking can allow for everything from fairer American elections to better pandemic planning.” By reading this book alongside our study of geometry, my students will be able to explore how interdisciplinary geometry can be and connect our lessons to real world events, including COVID-19. Furthermore, after a year of little to no math and the absence of social interactions, I know my students will require "brain breaks" from working the quantitative side of the mind and participating in group work. This book will be the perfect addition to our classroom as it will allow for quiet, independent reading time when my students need a change of pace. In addition, the plush chairs will help me create the start of a "reading nook" in the corner of my classroom which I hope will help with mental health. Students are not used to sitting in a classroom chair all day, so a comfortable reading nook will allow me to rotate students amongst activities with one being a resting and relaxing area as needed while reading.
