My classroom has struggled with having clean, sturdy furniture for many years now. My classroom culture is very diplomatic and classes are usually held forum-style; desk-less with chairs arranged in a half-moon. I do my best to highlight student voice and welcome open discussion every day.
Every year we experience quite a bit of grief due to cheap furniture. Our chairs are old plastic and tend to crack which leads to uncomfortable pinching. The desks and chairs are also often too small for our students and are uncomfortable to sit in for over an hour.
The chairs that I would like to purchase with this project are light-weight, the faux leather bottom and back are easy to clean and sanitize after each period, and they give a professional look to the classroom while being much more comfortable than our current selection. I hope to keep them for our students to use for years to come.
If we are training our students to become professionals, I believe it is time we started treating them as such. Giving them better furniture will make them feel comfortable and important (you would never see a CEO sitting in the kinds of chairs we have), which will increase their self-esteem, overall wellness, and learning outcomes.
