First graders need to use concrete objects and counters to learn new math concepts before their brains can go on to the next level of understanding that is the abstract. Their minds are still learning to visualize and make meaningful connections to the math in their everyday life. The “Pop Its” will help to give my students a concrete and tactile experience to help them learn new math concepts. For some first graders who want to love math just as much as the others but struggle with it, these students need a lot of concrete objects and hands-on experiences to help make math make sense to them. In this age of COVID-19, “Pop Its” can also help them to have their own math manipulatives and not have to share with others. It’s easier to use than counters which fall to the ground and get messed up when bumped. It’s also easy to clean and disinfect and durable.
