The pandemic has been difficult for all of us and students need social and emotional learning (SEL) now more than ever. My project will give each of my students an interactive notebook that we will use for daily mindfulness exercises and journaling. I have asked for composition notebooks and writing supplies so that they can get creative and colorful as they explore their thoughts and get focused for class. I have also asked for bins to store these in so that they have a place to put them in class that is distinct and special. My goal is to give my students an opportunity to practice mindfulness with me, and then have a special place to journal about their struggles, emotions, gratitude, and more introspective concepts. My students often have very little to call their own, so a simple notebook and special writing utensils or even their own pencil will mean a lot to them. My hope is that after a very tough year, my class can be a space for not only math, but hopes, dreams, emotion, and security.
