Read-alouds in the classroom are an important, engaging way for students to learn more about people who are the same and different from them, and to have fun while doing so. I plan to use read-aloud books in my 5th grade homeroom as a way of teaching kindness and diversity. My classroom consists of around 50% of English Language Learners. I believe that reading these books aloud to my students will help them grow in their English oral reading skills. These students will practice listening and processing reading in English, as well as having conversations regarding concepts we have read about together. I have hopes that these books will also promote a welcoming and caring classroom environment that accepts everyone.
