We are returning to in-person learning this year and I want to support my students emotionally and academically. After the trauma of the past year and the continuing pandemic issues I worry that many may not want to come to school for different reasons. I hope that providing them with a project to focus on and working together in small groups will help them reconnect with friends old and new. I hope that being responsible for feeding and care of their aquarium will give that incentive to come to school. We know that aquariums have been proven to provide a calming atmosphere for people and studies have found that there is a loss of tension when fish are present in the classroom. In my marine science classroom, I want to set-up teaching aquariums with both fresh and saltwater. We currently have tanks and miscellaneous equipment left over from previous years but need new equipment and supplies to get started again. Students will set up the tanks and be responsible for the daily upkeep. Working with classmates to ensure the aquarium is looked after and tasks are carried out will improve the team working skills of the students. They will take and record weekly reading of the water chemistry using the test kits; ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. This is a good tool to learn data collection and analysis. We have eight tanks total in a combination of small, medium and large tanks. In order to get the five small, one medium and one large tanks up and running for freshwater animals the students need: filters, air pumps, tubing, one-way valves, airstones, lights and surge protectors (water resistant). These tanks will be used to house a variety of freshwater fish. One important part of the aquarium care will be maintaining it.
