Students come to school to learn and are expected to have the materials that they need during the lesson. We often assume that all students are capable of financially buying all the materials that are listed on their school material list. But, that is not always the case. So far with the first 4 weeks of the school year 2021-2022, almost half of my students are coming to school with no bags and no materials. I often have to provide them pens, pencils, markers, papers, notebooks, and worst-case scenario, I have to keep sanitizing the pens that they are using because I do not let them take them home. As a math teacher, I also love to use Post-its because it helps my students to share their concerns with me anonymously even after my lessons. The Post-its help me understand my students' literacy in math by telling me what they do and do not understand. I've run out of Post-its already and other materials that they need to help them with their literacy in math and I do not know any other resources to go and ask for help from. I strongly believe that everyone has a chance to be literate in everything just as long as they have all the materials that they need.
