I began my professional career 6 years ago, working as speech-language pathologist with students from preschool age to 6th grade, at two different schools in a rural community in Hawaii. As a speech-language pathologist, I am part of the Special Education Team that diagnoses and treats many types of learning differences including articulation disorders, language impairments, fluency disorders, auditory processing disorders, social communication disorders, as well as, nonverbal language learning. Some of my students also struggle with phonological awareness and reading comprehension. Over the years, I've developed a passion for literacy-based language learning. I've had the pleasure to watch my students' language become enriched through the use of books. This type of learning fuels vocabulary development, enhances their imaginations, and takes them to places they've never been before! For example, the majority of my students have never seen snow! We use winter themed books every year during the holiday season to bring their experience of "chilly weather" to life. I am requesting funds to develop a curated library filled with language enriched books to use in my therapy sessions with my students; the goal of this project is to have a theme for every month of the school year. Each book will be paired with a hands-on language activity for my students to enjoy.
