With over 50% of my students being English Language Learners, I aspire to boost their acquisition of academic language through meaningful, interactive, and enjoyable methods. The integration of music can elevate my students' development of language learning in all subject areas. Music is a universal art that can engage my students to experience the tactile, auditory, and vocal stimulus as they learn content and knowledge. I believe all students enter school with foreknowledge of basic music as evidenced in the beat to which they walk into the classroom and the tempo in their footsteps as they run about the playground. Best practice exhorts teachers to capitalize off students' background knowledge. Therefore, the use of musical instruments can expand their experience of music while making connections with academic language. My students will engage in concerts of rhythm sticks as they tap to the beats of one to one correspondence. The sound of bells will fill the room as they dance with bells while learning prepositions. The movement of sand blocks will emphasize their experience with adverbs and adjectives. Ultimately, these musical instruments provide the sensory and interactive supports for my students to engage in enjoyable lessons.
