The past year demonstrated to me the importance of a physical, hand-written note-taking and interactive in-person learning activities to ensure students are encoding the information covered in math class and applying new knowledge via interactive activities. My students struggled a lot with retention of math content this past year. I plan to adhere to a comprehensive note-taking system across all of my classes this year to improve engagement and retention. The biggest struggle my students faced this past year, through distance learning, was trying to find a way to keep digital notes and materials organized on their personal devices. I know a lot of my students' families do not have the economic resources to buy new binders, notebooks, and writing supplies for each other their classes. This donation would allow me to provide my students with all the essential materials to keep an organized class binder throughout the year. This will ensure students waste less time hunting down prior notes and can focus on learning and reviewing the math standards for our class. Further, the graphing paper and compasses will allow my students to take a hands-on approach to the Algebra 2 and Geometry lessons, by drawing precise graphs and shapes by hand (as opposed to the online calculators and sketch tools we were limited to last year, online). These opportunities help deepen student understanding and their ability to apply math knowledge to real world contexts.
