These bookshelves will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. The World Language Standard emphasize three modes of communications. One of the modes is the interpretive communication through reading in the target language. Currently, I don't have a classroom library that is easily accessible to my students, and one of my goals for this year is to help students read more and improve their interpretive communication skills by providing easy access to the reading materials and provide in class reading time. Students will be able to access to the books easily, which will help them develop reading skills. The Furoshiki cloths and other objects will give students a taste of being in Japan. The Furoshiki cloths show the seasons, culture, and activities in each month in Japan. Students will be able to see different cloths each month in my classroom and will learn the culture and activities shown on the cloths, along with the other Japanese culture significant objects - happy cats and cherry blossoms. Japanese calligraphy ink will help them experience the culture in my classroom. It would also be a very good meditation tool for students with this stressful COVID life. With these new book shelves, Furoshiki cloths, and other decorative items, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own proficiency levels in a classroom where they can immerse in Japanese culture. They will not able to travel to Japan for a while due to the COVID restrictions, but they will be able to feel like they were in Japan in my classroom. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more,. This project will help my students strengthen their reading skills and their love of Japan.
