I need Spanish books to stock my Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) book collection in my high school classroom. I want to build a Reading Library for my students so that they will have a variety of choices for SSR. Stephen Krashen, linguist and professor emeritus at the University of Southern California, tells us that "there is overwhelming research showing that recreational reading in a second language is a powerful means of improving grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and writing ability--and it is far more efficient and far more pleasant than traditional instruction." Some people have said, "I took Spanish in high school years ago, and I didn't learn anything." In years to come, I do not want to hear my students saying that. I want to give my students the best opportunities to learn to read, write, and speak Spanish, to study other cultures, and, possibly, to see the world beyond our small town. I have been purchasing Spanish books for a couple of years in order to create my library. So far, I only have 22 books. The 145 students that circulate through my classroom each day would surely finish off those books in no time. So, as soon as my library is well stocked, I plan to have them reading twice a week to start and then increase the frequency and length of time gradually. With your support, I will be able to provide my students with tools that will help them learn Spanish faster and more fluently. As Stephen Krashen said, "Picking up word meanings by reading is 10 times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction." I cannot wait to see my students actively reading-- in Spanish! Gracias ustedes de antemano.
