My first grade class can be described as a bundle of energy. With 17 boys and 9 girls, it's no wonder people often comment that my class is "vibrating". My students have active bodies and busy brains and need hands on materials to explore, discover and learn with. Many students can do well learning through direct instruction, practice pages, or even just sitting still and simply listening. For some students, sitting still is simply not an option; these students need to be moving, doing, and yes, even talking. Indeed, most students will do even better when they can make their own personal discoveries and physical connections to the world around them. This is true for my first graders and it is certainly true when it comes to understanding subjects in math, like geometry.
