I am extremely lucky to have a very diverse classroom of students. It is my belief that children deserve to see themselves in the books they read. Diverse books give students the chance to relate, see themselves, and appreciate other cultures. The excitement that my students show when I begin reading a book with a character with the same hair as them, that celebrates the same holiday as them, or has a similar name, makes me so happy. In addition, my students are facing various challenges both at home and at school. Due to this, they often have big emotions and they are in the process of learning to regulate. Incorporating SEL literature allows students to learn strategies to regulate their emotions and shows them that they're not alone. Books with lessons of perseverance, kindness, and self-control have such a positive impact on classroom community. By donating to this project, you are providing a diverse group of students with culturally-responsive literature that will help them grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
