Students eagerly connected the small stray dog to Bob, the snacks to the idea that all living beings deserve care and nourishment, and even the pudding to mud—sparking conversations about Ivan's early life, his name given by his parents, and how he once used mud to paint on his mother's back as a baby gorilla.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful moments came when students participated in a hands-on activity using their care packages. Each student pulled an item from their grab bag and described how it connected to the story. Their responses were thoughtful and insightful—students explained how the dog symbolized friendship and loyalty like Bob, how snacks represented meeting basic needs, and how the pudding symbolized mud and Ivan's earliest memories of comfort and creativity with his family. This activity sparked rich discussions about empathy, kindness, and what it means to truly care for others. It was incredible to see students not only understand the story, but also internalize its deeper message and apply it to real-life experiences.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to build on these experiences by diving deeper into projects that extend the themes of our novel.
