According to The Literacy Project, "Students who choose what they read and have an informal environment in which to read tend to be more motivated, read more and show greater language and literacy development." I am passionate about building a classroom library that is diverse, engaging, and interesting! Reading is an absolutely essential skill to student success in school and beyond. It can be difficult to motivate students to read when the pressures of social media have such a hold on them. Providing my students with relevant and exciting new novels in my classroom library is one of the most important ways to connect students with reading. I love to recommend books from my classroom library, and feel that students are more responsive when I can put the book direct in their hands, and follow up later. My students are required to read one YA novel as an independent project each semester. This project will be far more valuable to students if they have a variety of options!
