I teach about 150 9th graders each day at a high school in Florida. Most of them want to go on to college, but not all of them have the family backgrounds that would prepare them for that challenge in terms of vocabulary. Teaching academic vocabulary to a culture of students who are more familiar with television than books can be a challenge.
