I am a new, first grade teacher in a school and classroom with a very multi-ethnic group of students. My goal is to incorporate the diversity of the world into all of our learning activities, especially our language arts. As we read and study, I want my students to be able to see themselves in books, classroom materials and sharing activities. Because our Language Arts time begins in our circle, having a carpet that comfortably seats all of my students and allows for spacing between them is a great start to them settling in and paying attention. Stocking our class library with books that are ethnically diverse aids in making the children feel inclusive and proud to share their own culture. Our little ones are desperately attempting to adjust to being back in a classroom setting. Putting them in a fun and friendly environment and encouraging their interaction will definitely aid in my teaching.
