Books are like mirrors in that they can reflect what we know about the world. All students deserve to see themselves in a book. Whether it be clothing, food, language, or hairstyles, representation in children's books is so important. As Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop said, "When books don't serve as mirrors for all students, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in society." I want all of my students to know they are valued. I have carefully selected books that represent a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities. These books will be added to our classroom library. When students choose a book, they will be able to find one that represents them and know that they are valued.
